Publishing in The Concord Review (TCR) is one of the strongest opportunities for high school historians who want to showcase substantial academic research through a highly selective, internationally recognised journal.

As TCR has rigorous expectations, demanding research standards, and low acceptance rates, the process can feel intimidating at first. This guide breaks things down clearly so you understand what TCR looks for and how to prepare a competitive submission.

What Kind of Work Can You Submit?

TCR publishes substantial historical research essays that demonstrate original argumentation, analytical depth, and extensive primary and secondary sourcing. Essays typically range from 5,000–10,000 words (including endnotes and bibliography), with most accepted papers averaging around 8,000 words. Exceptionally strong essays may exceed 10,000 words.

Students may submit work on any historical topic - from ancient empires to contemporary geopolitics - as long as the paper shows deep research and strong academic writing.

Eligibility

TCR accepts submissions from secondary-school students (grades 9–12 or international equivalent). Students must be the sole authors of their papers, and all work must be written before beginning university.

Essays must be unpublished, with the exception of publication in school-level outlets, which TCR permits. Because the journal is highly competitive and publishes only about 5% of submissions, students should submit polished, well-developed work that reflects substantial research and independent analysis.

Submission Process

Students submit their paper through The Concord Review’s official submission form. To submit, students must hold an active subscription to TCR. The subscription and submission form can be accessed here: the form to subscribe and submit can be found here.

TCR accepts submissions year-round, and each essay is automatically considered for the next four issues. To be considered for a specific issue, the deadlines are:

  • August 1 — Winter issue

  • November 1 — Spring issue

  • February 1 — Summer issue

  • May 1 — Fall issue

Because of the journal’s selectivity, only about 5% of papers are accepted for publication.

Review Timeline

The review process typically takes 10–14 weeks. Essays are evaluated by the National Writing Board, which includes professional historians and academic experts. The complete evaluation criteria can be viewed here: Find the evaluation criteria here.

Students are notified approximately one month before the issue in which their essay will appear.

RISE Tips for Getting Accepted

Based on successful TCR submissions reviewed at RISE, the strongest papers usually include:

  • A sharply defined historical question or argument

  • Extensive primary and secondary research, properly cited

  • Strong narrative structure grounded in historical evidence

  • Analytical depth that goes beyond summarising events

  • Clear, formal academic writing with precise use of sources

  • Endnotes and bibliography formatted according to scholarly conventions

  • A conclusion that synthesises findings and advances a meaningful historical insight

Successful submissions balance rigorous research with clear argumentation and strong academic writing.
