Field

STEM, Humanities

Publishing in the Journal of High School Science (JHSS) is an excellent opportunity for high school students to share original research and ideas through a peer-reviewed STEAM journal.

As JHSS accepts submissions across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics fields and emphasizes scientific rigour, clear methodology, and accessible communication, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. This guide breaks the process down simply, helping you understand what JHSS looks for and how to prepare a competitive submission.

What Kind of Work Can You Submit?

JHSS accepts a range of submissions, including:

  • Original Research: Data-driven studies presenting measurable results and a clear, evidence-based contribution to existing scholarship.

  • Review Paper: Critical evaluations using existing knowledge, identifying gaps or limitations, and proposing new directions for future research.

  • Technical Note: Pieces focused on experimental or preliminary findings or analyses on specific technical topics.

  • Case Study: Analyses of clinical or epidemiological situations, including unique or uncharacteristic traits; may also be fictional.

Across all submissions, JHSS emphasises clarity, methodological rigor, logical structure, and reproducibility.

Eligibility

Only students currently enrolled in high school (grades 9–12) are eligible to submit. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. Students may work with mentors or teachers for guidance, but the primary author should be the student.

Publication Fee

JHSS does not charge any submission or publication fees.

Submission Process

Students must submit their manuscripts via the Scholastica HQ portal here. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, and authors should ensure their work adheres to JHSS guidelines - you can find the details on the RISE guide to apply to JHSS.

Review Timeline

The typical turnaround time is approximately one month. Reviewers’ comments for published manuscripts are made publicly available. Authors can explore past published manuscripts (from Issue 3, 2024 onward), identify those that align with their research, and review corresponding peer reviews online.

RISE Tips for Getting Accepted

Based on award-winning submissions reviewed by RISE, competitive JHSS papers generally:

  • Present quantitatively rigorous and statistically supported results.

  • Address well-defined research questions or experimental problems.

  • Demonstrate methodological transparency, enabling reproducibility.

  • For review papers, identify gaps or limitations and propose innovative solutions.

  • Show conceptual creativity, connecting ideas, methods, or fields in novel ways.

  • Follow consistent formatting for headings, tables, figures, and references.

  • Use clear visuals (tables, figures, equations) that enhance understanding.

  • Communicate in a lucid, confident, and academically disciplined tone.

  • Reflect intellectual curiosity and independence, showing critical thinking and thoughtful experiment design.

Application Deadline

JHSS accepts submissions on a rolling basis, so students can submit at any time of the year.
