Which is the better route to take , to have a broad and diverse set of experiences or to specialize in a particular field  as you apply to the Ivies and other top schools? We will look at that in detail.

What is a 'Spike'?

A spike is what we call that which indicates a high degree of success or expertise in a single field  which causes you to stand out from the crowd. As opposed to being well rounded which means you do many things fairly well, having a spike is when you excel at one or two things which may be science, music, sports, business, or some other interest.

Examples of Spikes: Examples of Spike:.

  1. Presenting original research in a scientific journal.

  2. Winning out in national and international contests (math, debate, science fairs, Olympiads).

  3. Creating a nonprofit with real impact

  4. Becoming an author that sees print or an app developer.

  5. Earning national fame in sports, music or the arts.

A spike is a result of depth, not just breadth. It is from years of dedication, passion, and meaningful impact in your field.

Why Do Top Colleges Love Spikes?

Top colleges  which also include the Ivies and other very selective schools  don’t just look for students which have it all. We are looking for students that will be leaders, game changers and innovators in their fields. Here’s why standouts stand out:.

Future Leaders: Colleges look for students that will grow to be great researchers, entrepreneurs or artists. A tell sign is that you have what it takes to reach that level.

Unique Value: Among a large pool of high achieving applicants which includes many with high grades and test scores, what makes your application stand out.

Compelling Story: A jump out from the page that you present in your essays and in interviews is what we are looking for; it displays who you are and what you stand for.

Building a Diverse Class: Colleges prefer a diverse class in terms of talent and background not each individual as a whole. We get that mix of different skills and views from those which stand out.

How Do You Develop a Spike?

Developing a spike is not about putting on a show of passion or jumping on trends: it is about what you truly care for. Here is how you do it:.

Identify Your Passion: What do you do for fun when no one is looking?

Go Deep, Not Just Wide: Focus on perfecting a few areas.

Pursue Big Goals: Aim to achieve what is meaningful  whether that be launching a project, winning an award, or publishing your work.

Show Commitment: Colleges see consistent effort over time which is what they value not a big push senior year.

Connect Your Activities: Support your spike with related extracurricular activities, courses, and summer programs.
