About the project
This study examines whether snack products on Blinkit, an Indian e-commerce grocery platform, that display front-of-package nutrition marketing labels receive different customer star ratings than unlabeled products, and whether the type of label claim matters. The author developed an original five-dimensional scoring framework, assessing typographic visibility, color contrast, packaging simplicity, mindful-eating cues, and relative pricing, to assign each of 30 sampled products (five each across six categories: ice cream, chips and namkeen, bakery and biscuits, instant food, sauces/spreads, and beverages) a composite behavioral label score, which was then compared against the product's existing Blinkit customer star rating. The analysis found that Blinkit's customer ratings are heavily right-skewed and cluster in the upper half of the scale regardless of label quality, while the behavioral scores were far more evenly distributed, indicating the star-rating system cannot distinguish between products the way the label-design framework can. Category-level case studies revealed a consistent pattern: well-known, trusted brands (Parle Monaco Cheeselings, Nescafe, McCain, Betty Crocker) achieved high customer ratings despite weak nutrition-communication design, suggesting brand legacy and taste satisfaction dominate consumer ratings over label clarity, while niche health-positioned products (Mr. Makhana roasted snacks, Tencha Ceremonial Matcha) scored highly on the behavioral framework but only received mid-range customer ratings, suggesting their nutritional communication may be undervalued by the market. The study concludes that Blinkit's current single-dimension star rating is not a reliable proxy for nutrition-related product communication, and recommends the platform introduce multidimensional consumer ratings (covering taste, packaging, value, and nutrition labeling separately) to give both shoppers and producers more useful feedback.
