About the project
This paper examines whether renewable-energy-powered hydroponic systems can improve income and affordability for small-scale farmers compared to traditional farming. Using a comparative financial model built around a 200-square-meter farm plot, together with secondary data from the FAO, World Bank, IRENA, and India's National Sample Survey Office, the study compares setup costs, monthly operating costs, payback periods, and annual income across subsidised hydroponics, unsubsidised hydroponics, and traditional farming, and situates these findings against country case studies from Singapore, India, China, Vietnam, and Kenya, each facing different land, income, and food-security pressures. The financial model shows unsubsidised hydroponics generating roughly Rs. 420,000-444,000 in annual income from a 200-square-meter plot versus about Rs. 36,000 for traditional farming on the same land, with subsidised farmers breaking even in around 4-5 months compared to 8-10 months for unsubsidised farmers, largely due to differences in initial setup cost. Solar power was found to meaningfully reduce long-term operational costs by lowering dependence on grid electricity, but high upfront setup costs for both hydroponic equipment and renewable energy systems remain the primary barrier to adoption, particularly for lower-income households who may need 10-20 months just to save enough for a basic system. The paper concludes that renewable-energy-powered hydroponics have strong long-term income and land-use advantages over traditional farming, especially at small scale, but that subsidies, financing schemes, or phased adoption strategies are likely necessary to make the initial investment accessible to the small-scale and beginner farmers the paper focuses on, and calls for further government support such as expanded subsidy schemes to accelerate adoption.
