Here are 10 exceptional exchange programs that offer unforgettable experiences all around the world.

1. National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)

Location: Countries where Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Turkish, or Indonesian are spoken
Program Dates: Summer programs (6 to 8 weeks), Academic year programs (10-11 months) Cost: Fully funded by the U.S. Department of State (students only pay for passport and personal expenses)
Eligibility: U.S. citizens aged 15 to 18, enrolled in high school, strong academic performance required

NSLI-Y provides immersive language study and cultural exposure through homestays and community involvement. This honor-focused program prioritizes national security through critical languages through formal classroom studies and practice, like study courses, opportunities to work with a mentor on tasks that lead to immersion in a language, especially opportunities to practically apply the language which lead to acculturation.

2. AFS Intercultural Programs

Location: 40+ countries including France, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Germany, and Argentina

Eligibility: Ages 15-18, minimum 2.5 GPA, demonstrated maturity and adaptability

AFS brings together local high school enrollment and host family placement for real immersion into cultural practices and values, AFS engages students in day-to-day school life and family life. It has aspects of language tutoring, cultural orientation, and organized activities that create the opportunity for language exposure and enrichment while continuing to build deep-rooted connections in the community and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

3. Rotary Youth Exchange

Location: 100+ countries through local Rotary club partnerships worldwide
Program Dates: Full academic year (typically August–June)
Cost: Variable by location; often subsidized by local Rotary clubs ($8,000-$15,000 average)
Eligibility: Ages 15-19, sponsored by local Rotary club, demonstrated leadership potential
Deadline: Varies by local club, typically December–February for following year

The Experiment is actively involved in experiential learning through themed programs that provide experiential homestays, opportunities for language study, and collaborative community-based work. Students are actively participating in a unique cultural experience rather than passively absorbing the experience, and they will study the local language through informal engagement during their program, while actively pursuing a topic area of interest for their study program, such as environmental conservation, peace studies, or traditional arts.

Weekly one-on-one Spanish tutoring occurs alongside the service project and cultural activities. Nacel provides intensive immersion into language with thoughtfully selected cultural activities, such as flamenco dancing in Spain or calligraphy in China, along with home stays. For high school students eager to boost their language skills across various regions in Europe, CEA CAPA has some fantastic summer language programs.Students not only have the opportunity to participate in formal lessons, but will also experience host families and be able to partake in planned excursions organized by the program.Students may go home with excursions to cultural attractions, like museums, culturally significant locations, festivals, or other fun things.
