Crafting a balanced college list is the best thing you can do for your college application process. A combination of reach, match, and safety colleges, and you are weighing having great choices with the highest possible chances of acceptance. This is the way to know and develop a balanced college list:

What Are Reach, Match, and Safety Colleges?

Reach Colleges:

These are schools in which your academic record—i.e., GPA and standardized tests—are lower or at the lower boundary of the admitted student average range for the institution. Admission is extremely competitive, and even top students can be less than 40% likely to get in, particularly at highly selective institutions. Reach schools are okay to apply to if they're a dream school, but be sure you're okay with rejection.

Match (or Target) Schools:

Match schools are the ones where your academic record is closely similar to that of the average admitted student. You're at or near their average test scores and GPA, and thus you have an even shot (around 40–60%) of getting in. These schools are an excellent academic fit and will most likely provide the programs and campus life you are looking for.

Safety Schools:

A safety school is a college whose profile (credentials, scores, GPA, etc.) is well above the average of admitted students, making it almost a formality (usually greater than 80% chance you’ll be admitted). While safety schools may not seem important, they are what will allow you peace of mind that you will have good choices no matter how the application process goes. When selecting safety schools, it is important to choose schools that, despite being a safety, you still want to go to and would truly be happy attending.

How Many of Each Should Be On My List?

Submit 8-10 total applications, spread, ideally, as follows: 3 reach, 4-5 match, and finally, 2-3 safety schools. This will provide you with a variety of good options, without burdening yourself with too many applications at once. You can feel comfortable that in any of the categories reach, match, or safety, they are all schools you would love to be at.

Steps for Creating Your Balanced College List

Self-reflection:

Consider your academics, strengths, interests, and goals. Think of possible areas of study, size of school, location, student life , and other activities on campus.

Research institutions:

Use college search engines, college guide books, and college websites to evaluate your academics as compared to the average  accepted student at each institution. Take notes on acceptance rates, financial aid, and other programs offered.

Categorize Your List:

From your investigation, classify each college as a reach, match, or safety to you personally. Keep in mind that the categorization of a school may be different for different individuals based on individual qualifications.

Visit (or Tour) Campuses:

Whenever possible, visit the campuses and attempt to gauge the environment. If a visit is out of the question, take virtual tours or participate in online info sessions to assist in comprehending student life and academics.

Finalize and Apply:

Trim the list down to a reasonable number, ensuring you have a balanced set of all 3  types. Give your best effort on each application, tailoring essays and materials for each school.
