Peer mentorship is an effective educational strategy, where more experienced students (mentors) help less experienced students (mentees) with a variety of support related to learning, guidance, encouragement, and development of knowledge. The peer mentor model is popular in schools and universities and, while there are benefits to students about academics, the benefits reach far beyond academics. Here is a description of the value of peer mentorship - and how it creates the learner experience for both mentors and mentees.

1. Boosts Academic Performance

Peer mentors can assist students with homework help, study strategies, and exam prep - and demonstrate strategies for overcoming difficult concepts. Mentors act as models in the use of study strategies and organizational strategies to develop the skills and mindset of success. Some level of improvements in grades or academic outcomes were identified by students who followed a peer mentoring program. The confidence that emerges often transforms the ability of students to feel comfortable participating in classroom discussions and approaching challenging assignments.

2. Fosters Personal Development

Mentors provide a level of positive role modeling in conversations about goal setting, time management, and stress management. The routine of meeting together regularly often helps the mentee engage with the idea they could identify new habits, and desired, positive behaviours that promote their development and subsequent success. Peer mentoring is a process to support students in developing life skills related to areas such as communication, leadership, and problem solving - skills that may help them not only in their schooling, may also serve them well in their future employers and relationships.

3. Promotes Social Integration

Peer mentors help to build a caring connection which supports student connection and sense of belonging. Mentees have access to someone who can reach out to and lean on for guidance to engage in new academic and social situations. Mentors are often the glue for first-year students because they provide invitations to clubs and study groups and use campus resources. The peer mentor support system is crucial to new students and vital for traditionally underrepresented and marginalized populations of students.

4. Improves Communication and Empathy

Both mentors and mentees develop their communication skills and become better communicators through meaningful exchanges of regular conversation. Mentees practice questioning and voicing cares, while mentors practice listening, and sharing related guidance to the mentee's experience, all done with consideration to clarity and empathy. These conversations foster understanding and compassion which are valuable attributes for students to possess, and important experiences to have as they prepare to work in teams in college and beyond.

5. Encourages Goal Setting and Accountability

Mentors assist mentees or younger students develop realistic academic and personal goals or objectives and break them into smaller steps. When mentors check in with their students regularly, it helps keep accountability, often inspiring students to keep moving forward or take time to celebrate their progress. This partnership holds productive tension, helping students develop ownership of their own learning and strengthen their resilience while facing the rigor of adversity. Mentors enjoy supporting others and achieving success as a team but also tend to develop more goal orientation themselves.

6. Builds Leadership and Confidence in Mentors

Peer mentoring is a great way for a person to grow as an individual. While students help other students through the process, they develop their leadership, coaching, and organizational skillsets. The entire mentoring experience is confidence-building and it brings about a greater awareness of personal strengths. Many student mentors realize they have had a positive effect on those students selected to be mentored. Perhaps the most important benefit to a student mentor is feeling more prepared for future leadership roles and having a better connection to their school community.

7. Creates a Supportive Learning Community

Peer mentorship fosters a sense of community, inclusivity, and respect for each other. Students learn to listen to multiple perspectives and support each other's growth while also using this community connection to overcome student isolation and inviting all students to be stewards of the school's environment. Schools with successful peer mentorship initiatives often see a higher level of student engagement and student success, along with a higher level of satisfaction with their school experience overall.

When students are involved with peer mentorship, they not only see positive academic outcomes, students also develop additional life skills and potential friendships through their work together. Mentors and mentees share a greater potential to have an impactful experience which enables them to resolve their learning objectives and ultimately be successful together.
