STEM

Publishing in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), run by Society for Science, is one of the most significant opportunities for high school students to showcase original scientific research at the national level.

As STS highlights independent inquiry, rigorous methodology, and clarity in communicating scientific impact, the competition can feel demanding and highly selective. This guide breaks the process down simply, helping you understand what STS looks for and how to prepare a competitive submission.

What Kind of Work Can You Submit?

The competition accepts individual research projects across pure science, applied science, engineering, and interdisciplinary innovation. Each submission must present a clearly defined research question, strong experimental or analytical methods, and meaningful scientific contribution. Students may submit only one project per cycle, and all work must be completed during high school.

Eligibility

Students currently enrolled in high school (grades 9–12) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents may apply. Projects may originate from school labs, university labs, independent settings, or research programs. Collaborative work is permitted, but each submission must reflect independent contribution, analysis, and authorship. All materials must be original, unpublished, and not under review elsewhere.

Prizes

The STS awards significant recognition and funding to top submissions:

Top 300 Scholars:

  • $2,000 scholarship for each student

  • $2,000 for each scholar’s school to support STEM education

Top 40 Finalists:

  • An all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

  • Opportunities to present research to distinguished judges, policymakers, and national media

  • Extensive press coverage and recognition by Society for Science

Submission Process

Students must submit their work through the official Regeneron STS online portal. The application includes:

  • Research Report (up to 20 pages)

  • Research Abstract (max. 250 words)

  • Six short-answer analytical essays

  • Two recommendations (research mentor and teacher)

  • Official transcript and school report

  • Forms and certifications for human/animal research, safety, and originality

After submitting, students receive a confirmation email. Submissions are reviewed by scientific experts and staff, and any plagiarism or fabricated data leads to immediate disqualification. Students are encouraged to review past Scholar and Finalist profiles to understand expectations.

Review Timeline

The STS follows an annual cycle. The application typically opens in June, with the submission deadline in early November. After the review period, the Top 300 Scholars are announced in January. The Top 40 Finalists are selected shortly afterward and invited to Washington, D.C. for the Finals Week program. Winners and key announcements are published on the Society for Science website and social media pages.

RISE Tips for Getting Accepted

Based on award-winning projects reviewed by RISE, competitive STS submissions typically demonstrate:

  • A well-defined, original scientific question

  • Strong evidence of independent initiative in design and execution

  • Robust experimental methodology and thorough data analysis

  • Clear scientific communication with effective visuals and explanation

  • Interpretation that connects results to broader scientific and societal significance

  • Intellectual maturity, including acknowledgment of limitations

  • A personal voice and sense of curiosity in essays

  • A balance of technical rigor, creativity, and relevance
