Publishing in the Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI) is an excellent opportunity for middle and high school students to share original scientific work through a respected, peer-reviewed, open-access platform.
As JEI emphasises scientific literacy, rigorous methodology, and clear communication across fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental science, and social sciences, it can feel a little overwhelming at first. This guide breaks the process down simply, helping you understand what JEI looks for and how to prepare a competitive submission.
What Kind of Work Can You Submit?
JEI accepts original research articles, review papers, and short reports. Original research papers present novel experimental, observational, or analytical findings conducted by students (3–6 pages). Review articles synthesize existing research on a focused scientific question or theme (4–7 pages). Short reports cover preliminary findings, innovative methods, or focused analyses (2–4 pages). Across all formats, JEI prioritises clarity, logical structure, strong reasoning, and well-documented scientific work.
Eligibility
Students in grades 6–12 are eligible to submit. Submissions may come from independent research, school projects, or work completed with mentors or institutions. Group submissions are permitted, but one student must serve as the corresponding author and handle all communication. Each student or team may submit only one paper per year. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
Publication Fee
JEI does not charge publication fees. Students retain copyright ownership while granting JEI a non-exclusive license to publish.
Submission Process
Manuscripts must be submitted through the JEI Online Submission Portal here. Authors will be asked to provide their name, school, grade, project title, research field, abstract, keywords, and upload the manuscript. All submissions must include the Mentor Approval Form, signed by the student(s) and their mentor or supervising scientist, verifying ethical and supervised research. Only the corresponding author should complete the submission, and all co-authors and mentors must be accurately listed to avoid delays.
Review Timeline
JEI accepts submissions on a rolling basis. Every manuscript goes through preliminary editorial screening, followed by peer review by two or more scientists. Authors then revise their papers in response to detailed feedback. After revisions, the editorial board makes a final decision. Accepted papers undergo copy-editing and are published online. Students receive constructive feedback throughout the process, helping strengthen both scientific understanding and writing.
RISE Tips for Getting Accepted
Based on award-winning JEI submissions reviewed by RISE, competitive papers generally show:
Strong interdisciplinary framing that integrates conceptual theory with empirical or case-based evidence

Critical engagement with existing scholarship, including acknowledgement of limitations and alternative perspectives
Explanation of the broader significance of the work for scientific or real-world issues
Precise, organized, and accessible writing
Professional presentation with accurate citations and clear visuals
Demonstrated originality, curiosity, and independent thought
Application Deadline
JEI accepts submissions year-round, so students can submit their papers any time.
