This philosophical and theoretical paper argues that student disengagement in education, where only 44% of U.S. students in grades 5-12 report being engaged in school, stems from educational systems' attempts to eliminate luck entirely through rigid standardization, and that superficial gamification (points, badges, leaderboards) fails to solve this because it can trigger 'value capture,' where the rich intrinsic goods of learning are supplanted by simplified, gameable metrics. Drawing on legal philosopher Ronald Dworkin's 1981 distinction between brute luck (unchosen circumstances) and option luck (outcomes of deliberate risk-taking under uncertainty), the paper argues that games remain engaging precisely because they let players increase their odds of success through skill within option luck, and that education systems, in their effort to eliminate brute luck's unfairness, have inadvertently eliminated option luck's engagement-generating uncertainty as well. The paper's core proposal is a group-based learning model: students are organized into small groups (3-4 students) whose combined scores determine grades, with group composition rotated unpredictably each term so that no student can game their placement. This design situates option luck in the (uncontrollable) formation of groups while preserving student agency in how they respond to and collaborate within them, drawing support from evidence on peer effects (Carrell et al.'s Air Force Academy study, where lower-ability students improved without harming higher-ability peers), team-based learning meta-analyses showing benefits from heterogeneous, rotating teams, and research on prosocial motivation. The paper acknowledges significant objections, including the risk that students repeatedly paired with underperforming peers could suffer real academic and admissions consequences, and that forced collaboration among adolescents navigating social status could produce resentment rather than growth, concluding that any such system requires careful facilitation, frequent rotation, and safeguards rather than assuming random grouping alone will produce positive outcomes.
